Windows Mobile 5/Cingular
Here is a list of things it’s useful to know when configuring a Windows Mobile 5 device, such as the QTek 8500, for use on the Cingular network.
- To get your IMEI, dial *#06#
- ActiveSync 4.2 available from MS here
- 2002 reference doc on homescreens
- Homescreen files need to be named foo.home.xml, not just foo.xml
- Opera Mobile settings
- Opera Mobile 8.6 assumes, badly, that \Storage is your storage card.
- In \Application Data\Opera edit:
- smartphone_keyboard.ini to add PgUp and PgDn (I deleted the 1 = Go to mapping, made 1 = Page up and 7 = Page down - use those exact spellings and capitalizations)
- opera.ini to change the cache and help file locations (change all instances of “\Storage\” to “\Storage Card\”)
- Create \Storage Card\Application Data\Opera, and move the contents of \Storage\Application Data\Opera into it, then delete \Storage\Application Data\Opera
- Internet Explorer: In the registry, HKeyCurrentUser\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders has values pointing to the location of the cache, history, and cookies; point these to the card
- Mail: Again, in the registry, change HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MAPI by adding values called AttachPath and PropertyPath, pointed at the card. Documented here.
- Other useful software:
- Resco Explorer 2005 ($20: powerful, flexible file manager/registry editor for Windows Mobile 5)
- Agile Mobile Messenger (Free: Yahoo, AIM, ICQ…)
- Pocket Nester (Free: NES emulator that works on my 8500)
- Via Virtual Earth (Free: pretty awesome, quasi-Stephensonesque)
- SBSH Facade ($15: homescreen plugin with improved calendar, launcher)
- The Core Pocket Media Player (Free: does what it says)
- BreakSoft Mobile Registry Editor (Free: runs on desktop PC, thus much easier for typing in new values)
