Welcome to the United States, Mr. Hu
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
The protester interrupted the ceremony [a meeting between PRC President Hu and US President Bush] by shouting to Bush to stop the Chinese president from “persecuting the Falun Gong.”Bush hates our freedom. This disgusting display of craven cowardice is the sort of thing that should put people off politicians forever. (Vote Freshman!) He had an opportunity: “Well, Mr. Hu, this is the United States and we’re out in public, and folks do this here.” Instead, he’s weakened his position with respect to any discussion he may have with Hu about civil rights, and exposed himself as a rank hypocrite.Bush later addressed the matter when he met with Hu in the Oval Office. “He just said this was unfortunate and I’m sorry it happened,” said Dennis Wilder, acting senior director for Asian affairs on the National Security Council staff.
Keep in mind his perpetuation of Clinton’s noisome “first amendment zones,” and consider his oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.” If he ever fully were to comprehend the contradiction he embodies, I suppose his head would explode. Fortunately for the safety of those around him, he doesn’t, he won’t, and explosion will be averted.
edit 21 April: CNN.com carries this doubleplus ironic quote from Bush: “‘We can be candid about our disagreements,’ Bush said. ‘I’ll continue to discuss with President Hu the importance of respecting human rights and the freedoms of the Chinese people.’”
